The purpose of this assignment is to develop an understanding of how different forms of media (social media, news, movies, television, advertisements, newspapers, magazines, etc.) influence common narratives (stories) regarding homelessness and how it is understood in the public sphere.

a) Select 5 different media sources depicting homelessness.

b) Using course readings (min. 5) prepare a 2 paragraph analysis of each media source. You must

include an image of the source.

c) When developing your analysis consider:

a. What narrative of homelessness is presented in the media sources?

b. Are there stereotypes and myths being used? Perhaps very subtly?

c. Is this narrative supported or countered by the reading(s) you’ve chosen?

d. Do you think the narrative presented in the media sources is perpetuating stereotypes

about homelessness or breaking them down?

d) You are encouraged to look for themes, patterns and connections between the 5 media sources

you are analyzing.

e) HINT***Consider the discussions generated by the Who, Why, Names activity in class.

f) Bibliography: You must use a minimum of 10 sources. 5 pieces of media + 5 course readings

are required. Additional scholarly material is optional.

g) Minimum page length: 5pgs (excluding title page and bibliography). Maximum page length:

7pgs (excluding title page and bibliography).

h) The Rubric for this assignment is posted on D2L.

i) Submit this assignment to D2L.

All written submissions must be double-spaced, 12 pt font, Times New Roman, include page numbers and have 1 inch margins. Proper and consistent referencing including a bibliography is required. Spelling and grammar will be included in the grade. Please proof read carefully.
