Due in 5 days Step 1: Choose 1 Topic Children and “Youth” in Ads Selling with Social Problems/Causes “Love Marks”: Selling with Brands “Lights Camera Campaign: Selling Politics Social Media and the Work of Being Watched Step 2: Choose an Ad or example (ie product placement) of Advertising in any medium (print, tv, outdoor, online, guerilla, forehead tattoos—your choice) Choose an ad or example not addressed in detail in class or your previous work. You may choose 2 ads (minimum) and a maximum of 5 ads. Alternately, you may choose 2 ads from 1 ad “campaign” from a single company, or compare 2 campaigns (maximum) from the same company (ie, Bud “Be Yourself” and Bud “Whassup?”). Each ad or example needs sustained attention in this Term Paper. Choose ads that exemplify your topic or challenge common assumptions. For example, essay titles could be: Obama’s “Yes We Can” and Election 2008 Social Media Advertising The Gap and the (RED) Campaign for Action Against AIDS Love Marks: Branding Luxury and Classiness in the Fashion Industry Soft Music and Smiles: Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s “Softer” Ad Campaign Step 3: Write an organized essay of at least 1500 words (max 1700) Use concepts covered in class as frameworks for analysis Make Introductions brief – end them with your Thesis Statement Provide a brief Semiotic Description of each ad; avoid lengthy “description.” Reference at least 2 authors assigned in the course. ATTACHED BELOW OR FOLLOW LINKS HERE: [login to view URL] [login to view URL] Reference at least 3 outside academic sources (news/mags can be used in addition) Utilize a recognized style (APA or MLA preferred) and CITE PAGE NUMBERS *Quote sources directly, and avoid paraphrasing when a quote is available Include an image or URL / screenshot of your ads following your Bibliography if possible Avoid long block quotes. *Integrate ALL quotes (quotes cannot stand alone in your essay): As Smith (2000, p. 12) says, “ads sell more than products…” and they “attract….” “Ads sell more than products” (Smith 2000, p. 12). Note: The Dove “real beauty” campaign, Apple campaigns, AXE body spray and other notable ad campaigns have had lots written about them. If you choose them, try to come at them with an original viewpoint or unexpected thesis.
