RESEARCH BIBLIOGRAPHY ASSIGNMENT ??" FILM 1410 FILM HISTORY ??" 08-09
The purpose of this assignment is to encourage you to develop research skills, including the use of RefWorks, a free software program available through York University Libraries. In addition, you will learn to adjudicate the quality of research sources and learn how to summarize sources.
1. Choose a research topic related to rep-synchronized sound cinema history (pre-1927). You may choose a film, filmmaker or other historical figure in film history, movement, national cinema, etc, keeping in mind that the more focused your topic is, the easier it will be to compile a strong bibliography.
2. Compile a bibliography of TEN (10) research sources on your topic. Of these 10 research sources, include one from EACH of the categories below.
Monograph
Essay in anthology (edited book)
Journal article (photocopied??"submit photocopy)
Electronic journal article
Magazine article
Newspaper article or review
Film
Thesis or Dissertation
Scholarly and reliable webpage
Unreliable internet webpage

You MUST use Modern Language Association (MLA) format for these references (select this style in RefWorks). You are encouraged to use the MLA Handbook for information about proper MLA bibliographic form; this book also has useful information on writing and formatting humanities research essays that will be invaluable for future Cinema and Media Studies courses.
5. Compare and contrast the arguments of TWO (2) of your sources in an essay of 500 words (2 pages). Do not choose either a Monograph or a Film for this part of the assignment. You must briefly summarize the central argument or thesis of the two sources and evaluate the evidence that each source provides to support its thesis.
## Deliverables
You are advised to choose an individual film (e.g., Nosferatu) or a specific topic related to a filmmaker (e.g., class in Chaplin).
