NY Shakespeare Exchange is in search of a mobile app developer who can partner with our design and technology teams to create sleek, streamlined Android app for a groundbreaking exploration of film, theater, and mobile technology.
We have already developed an iOS version of the app that has been approved by Apple and will be available in the App Store next week. We are now looking to create a version of the app for the Android Marketplace. We have all assets and can provide functional annotations as needed.
The app is quite basic and will need the following features:
- Push notification (e.g. can be manual via Google Cloud Messaging)
- Featured video (will need to be updated from an external source)
- Single Point Map (will need to be updated from an external source)
- Multiple Point Map (will need to be updated from an external source, links location and video)
- YouTube feed
- Social sharing (e.g. Twitter/Facebook)
THE PROJECT
The Sonnet Project is a massive multi-artist internet-based interpretation of Shakespeare’s sonnets that will put these astounding poems quite literally into the pockets of people across the globe. We will bring together an adventurous group of filmmakers and actors to create film versions of all 154 sonnets that will live on the Internet and be delivered to the public by way of a specially designed Sonnet Project mobile app.
Each sonnet video will be filmed in a unique location throughout the five boroughs of New York City, the birthplace of American cinema. From the iconic to the forgotten, we've chosen locations with deep cultural significance. In this way, we juxtapose the poetry of the city with the poetry of the Bard, and find a deep contemporary relevance for Shakespeare's sometimes elusive language.
The project will span one full year, launching on Shakespeare's 449th birthday and culminating on his 450th. Throughout the year we will release a new sonnet video every 2-3 days. The videos and all supporting materials will be available free of charge to anyone in any sector of the population and foster an unprecedented level of access to Shakespearean performance.

New York Shakespeare Exchange is a federally recognized 501c3 nonprofit organization. We offer innovative theatrical programming that explores what happens when contemporary culture is infused with Shakespearean poetry and themes in unexpected ways. We provide fresh points of entry to the work so that modern audiences will be exposed to the intrinsic power of Shakespeare. Our goal is to encourage an enthusiastic appreciation of classical theater and to expand the reach of the art form within new and existing audiences.
We are a small organization but have set aside some money for this project. We are budgeted to cover all costs of production and a moderate fee for the app developer.
