Story: Astronomers have detected a distant star that is about to go supernova (explode). They wish to establish a world wide system of observatories (known as Group C) to watch the supernova from widely dispersed sites under varying conditions. The exact moment of the supernova can only be predicted with limited accuracy (i.e. some time in the next six months or so) and a small number of low power telescopes will be watching the star continuously to detect the unmistakable early signs of instability (known as Stage 1). Astronomers have stated the business rule that many large high powered telescopes at Group C sites must be ordered to begin redirecting themselves towards the part of the sky where the supernova is located within 60 seconds of the early warning signs being detected. Following the supernova, the Group C observations will continue for around 3 weeks (this period is known as Stage 2). Initial analysis of the data will take a further six months (Stage 3) and future astronomers will want access to the raw and analyzed data for the foreseeable future (Stage 4).
