I need to create a Windows desktop application that uses the Internet connection to read the content of a specific webpage and displays its content with the hyper-links in the desktop window.
In simple words, the application shall monitor a given URL every N minutes and, if the content of the page changed, display a window on desktop with the updated content of the page.
The page is simple HTML, predominantly text. Sample page to be displayed is here:
?
The application shall include the usual easy Windows installation part.
It shall work as follows after the installation:
1. Record Jan 1-2009 as “last modified?? date.
2. Check whether the Internet connection is available
3. If not available, set timer for 5 min and go to sleep
4. If connection is available, read “properties?? information of the given webpage (URL)
5. If the page’s? “modified?? date is newer than “last modified?? date stored on desktop ??" display the content of the page with any hyper-links in a scrollable desktop window, size 150x200 located at the bottom-right corner of the screen
6. Record new “last modified?? date.
7. Set up timer for 5 min and go to sleep
8. Upon timer expiring - proceed to step? #2 above.
- "last modified date" refers to the date/timestamp visible through the browser on? every webpage under File->Properties? "modified" (last field).
It shows when the page was last modified. Since the desktop window only displays the content when? the URL was updated, this seems to be the way to monitor the updates to the page. If you have another way to know when the page was updated, wan look into this too.
?
- The application shall be developed so it’s very light on PC’s resources in terms of memory or processor usage.
