I've built out software infrastructures which include many apps and a common DB. As you add software, you just have to make sure you are setting up the DB to work right with that. You also have to take care of the DB by doing regular backups, as well as RAID and failover if you can afford it. I believe it's good for any software house to have a db tool that non-DBAs can use to get insight into the DB. As an aside, I have been working with NoSQL DBs lately -- particularly cassandra. Programming on those is different, but the advantage is they tend to scale linearly regardless of the amount of data being held. This may be something to consider.
