Customizable buttons with USB connection for Android

I am a skilled senior student at UC Davis, able to work on both the hardware and software sides of projects, I have designed several projects here on freelancer, involving MIDI over USB and bluetooth, R/C radio receivers, arduino shields, and lcd/touch screens. I have a couple of questions about your project; in your project you say that you need the buttons to be customizable, do you want them to be modifiable on the field? what kind of buttons do you want? small pushbuttons, or big safety-type buttons? how small/large should the device be?

I am a certified circuit designer (CID by IPC) and I have experience with microcontrollers (atmel family like amtega and atxmega), usb usage, and design thinking in manufacture prices (small footprint and cost of each component). The project will consist in a small microcontroller for the interface between the android USB OTG hub and the board.
