Writers Must Have Read The Book, "THINGS FALL APART" by CHINUA ACHEBE. I will like to have this completed by 12pm, Tuesday April 8th, 2014. ASSIGNMENT: CULTURE, COMMUNICATION, AND CONFLICT THINGS FALL APART (CHINUA ACHEBE) - Students must complete all 4 items below 1. Identify two patterns of culture (i.e. beliefs and practices) in the novel. Discuss the patterns and how they are embraced, espoused and/or enacted by those in the story. 2. Discuss two particular or seeming contradictions, especially as they are evident between the native culture(s) and the culture of the missionaries. 3. Pick a favorite character. Discuss two identities (e.g. gender, racial, ethnic, religious, class) that were most important to your favorite character. Be specific (e.g., if age identity is most important to your favorite character, describe how old she/he is, what aspects of her/his age are important, where/when this identity is emphasized). 4. Explain the identity/identities with which your favorite character experienced the most challenges (e.g., stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination). Give examples. Be specific. How did your favorite character deal with these challenges? Be specific. How you would as a person, have dealt with those challenges? Why? Tip: Be sure you support your claims with information from the novel. Papers should be typed in 12-point Times New Roman font, be double-spaced, and use 1 inch margins. Each paper must be at least 3 full pages, but no more than 4 full pages in length. A cover page is required. Please include your name, 700 number, title of the assignment, and instructor’s name on the cover page. The cover page does NOT count toward the page requirements. All pages must be stapled together. Papers must be grammatically correct and organized properly. This paper is worth 100 points. Scoring will be based on the following criteria: ➢ Writing mechanics: Is the use of language appropriate for the level of the course? Do you accurately and effectively communicate your points?? Note: I reserve the right to fail any student whose work does not meet the expectations of collegiate level writing. 10 points ➢ Organization and professionalism: Is the paper in proper essay form? Does the paper start with an introductory paragraph that explains the paper’s purpose and outlines its contents? Have you used section headings to focus the reader’s attention? Does the paper have a polished, professional appearance that makes it appropriate for a college course? 10 points ➢ Content: Have you clearly and completely responded to all assignment questions? Does your paper show evidence of original thinking, rather than simple repetitions of ideas in the text? 80 points
