This is the extraordinary, inspiring true story of a young boy's epic journey from war-torn Afghanistan to Britain in pursuit of his dreams. Rashid's father was a respected elder in the local village who was often called upon to bridge differences between warring Taliban tribes. When Rashid was very young, his father was killed in a drone strike when he went to prevent two separate Taliban groups from fighting in the village and with others. His mother then faced the Taliban regime on her own and struggled to do what other women across the world take for granted. All the time, her actions were watched by the male Taliban members and she was not allowed out. When Rashid was just 4 years old, his mum passed away following complications with epilepsy brought on from stress and pressure. At an age when children should still believe in Santa and the Tooth Fairy, Rashid – an orphan at the age of five – survived by selling scrap metal begged from factories. Rashid Abdul was just 12 years old when he left behind the people he called his family in Afghanistan and began his perilous odyssey across continents. In the face of hunger, cruelty and violence, on a journey that was to take years, he never lost his fierce determination to reach his destination and realise his dream of one day changing the World. Rashid's journey culminated in him winning the Prince's Trust Rising Star award for the West Midlands region for 2017. This was down to his outstanding efforts to change his life for the better.
