Hello, Thanks for posting the project. I am an Electrical Engineer with 30 years’ experience of Customized Product Development for Instrumentation and Control applications. I am based in Kolkata (India) and running a business in the name of "Zetek Systems". I have a good hardware setup and a team for fabrication and testing. Following is the outline of my solution: Check In your present board if you can access pin 10 and 11 (serial in and out for AT89S52). It should be unused. An additional small circuit (to convert TTL to RS232 ) can be attached as bridge to send barcode to the new device. This will minimize the hardware work. The firmware has to be re-written.
