We seem to have a discrepancy between stats reported by our website and data actually delivered. Clients are understandably upset. We need to determine what the problem is, and then resolve it. **Background:** We recently acquired a website which employs several different forms of advertising as its primary business model. In the one in question, multiple advertising *clients* provide us with tiny, textual *ads*. Multiple website *publishers* offer the opportunity to their website visitors to respond to the ads. When a visitor responds by selecting one or more checkboxes, they become a *subscriber*, with one *subscription* for each checkbox selected. For each subscription, the corresponding client's account is debited, the corresponding publisher's account is credited, and the subscriber's email address and other information is queued for delivery to the appropriate client. i.e., The client pays us for the data, and we pay the publisher a portion of that money.) Here's the problem: Those three events should align perfectly. i.e., The number of subscriptions in our records should of course match the number actually sent. Two of our clients have indicated that they don't, and both have mentioned figures indicating roughly half of the data is being lost. ## Deliverables Your job is to identify the discrepancy and then find a way to resolve it. This is probably easier than it sounds. You will have access to the script which is recording the data in real-time, and queueing the subscriptions for their daily delivery. You'll have access to the cron job which sends the subscriptions to the client. The system was obviously designed to do the right thing, and it's been in operation for many years. There are three parallel webservers, (which are managed with a web load balancer), and for any file changes, the identical change needs to be **uploaded to all three**. Furthermore, on *each* server, *any* file which is modified needs have its *original* version (i.e., prior to modification) copied using cp -p (to preserve all meta-information) to the corresponding location ../archive/*filename*.php.*YYMMDD* , using the original file's file modification timestamp. In short, we don't (yet) have a code version management system, and we **need to be able to "roll back" changes** in case of a problem. | ![PGP][1] | You must have a PGP (or compatible) program. If you are not prepared to do this, please do not bid. | We will retain full legal rights to the code and/or data upon completion. All code and/or data is and becomes *our* intellectual property!
