The plan is to develop our game for Euro 2008 (which runs through June and July), allowing users to predict the scores of matches in the summer tournament. However, we will then run the same game for the 2008-09 Premiership season, so you should consider Euro 2008 as a test launch of the game, which will then expand into the main game for the year ahead. You should develop the game for the Premiership and we can disable certain features for Euro 2008.

Basically, what we want to do is copy the functionality of [url removed, login to view], modifying some sections and adding a few new features to suit our needs. Therefore, you should study closely the functionality of this website in order to understand the heart of the project.

Let us first look at how the Euro 2008 game, before looking at the additional features that we require for the expanded game and then examining these features in more detail.

Euro 2008

This game will be free to play and will widely promoted through UKSoccershop, our blog network, direct marketing and search engines. The purpose of this game will be to create traffic to our "network" and find a whole new range of customers. Therefore, throughout the game, we will look to promote at every opportunity our football shirts, which will be very popular throughout the tournament.

As the tournament only runs for four weeks, players will be competing for an overall prize, which will be given to the winner at the end of the tournament. It is likely that we will have a range of prizes for 1st-5th position and we may also include other prizes such as "most number of special points achieved", however, these can be determined at a later date.

In addition, to encourage mass participation in our game, we will encourage the use of mini-leagues. As well as competing in the overall game, users can participate in multiple mini-leagues, whereby they can create a league with their friends, work colleagues, etc. For every mini-league that attracts 100 or more active (active = users signs up and completes their predictions for group stage matches) participants, we will give a free football shirt to the winner of this league.

Premiership

This will be our main game and will require additional features. One such feature is that we will include a "paid" game. More details of this will be given below, but it will involve users paying for the chance to win bigger prizes.

In addition, the fixtures become a little more complicated, so we will need to work on a way to handle them.

Features

Please study the URL provided for full details of how these work. We are looking for an 80-90% clone of these features, with just a few modifications to suit our needs. And of course, we will have a much better design and layout!

The user should register, providing their name, email address, mini-league code (optional). They should also have to select their favourite club/country from the dropdown menu (we should be able to select these categories from the admin menu).

Once the user has registered, they should be presented with a list of fixtures, which they should be able to fill in with their predicted scores. Please view the site for exact details of how this works. They should also be able to review past predictions and see how many points they accumulated for each one. We should control the list of fixtures from the admin section. After the match has been played, we should simply enter the correct result for that fixture and the system should award points based on the following rules, to be displayed to the player.

Prediction of a correct score (ie. Italy 3 Romania 1) would result in three points, while prediction of a correct result (ie. Italy 2 Romania 0 - when the score was actually 3-1) would result in one points. Furthermore, should you make a special prediction then you will be awarded bonus points. A special prediction will be when you make a prediction that less than 25% off the other players choose. So for example, if Germany are strong favourites to beat Austria and 75% or more predict Germany to win, bonus points would be awarded if you choose Austria to be victorious. This is a good way to move your way up the leaderboard.

The user should be able to view the number of points that they have and also their position in the overall league table. This is where some differences between Euro 2008 and Premiership games come in.

For Euro 2008, as it's just a short tournament, there should just be one league table showing every player in the game, ranked by the number of points they have.

For the Premiership, there are additional complications. As you can see from the link provided, the user should be able to track their score in the league table. We would like to have the promotion and relegation format as shown in this league. To explain further, lets assume that the Premiership is the top league. The first 250 users who join the game will enter this division until it is full, with the next 250 entering the Division One. At the end of every month, the top 50 users (based on points) will be promoted to the above division and the bottom 50 relegated. Of course, we will also have an overall table, whereby the user can check their overall standing.

Furthermore, as we will be having monthly prizes, you should split between Monthly Standings and Overall Standings. Again, check the website to see how this works. The Monthly Standings will determine promotion/relegation and prize winners (the winner of Premier League each months gets a free shirt) and the Overall Standings determine the leader for the entire game. There should be no "divisions" for overall standings, just one big league (so for this part, it's similar to Euro 2008 game).

Supporters League

You will remember that when the user signed up, they had to select their favourite team or country. The purpose of this is to separate all users into groups with their fellow fans. So for example, all Arsenal fans will be in a separate mini-league which will show monthly and overall standings, just like the main game. This will allow us to award additional prizes to the winners of these leagues, as well as allowing us to send targeted emails to fans of each club with special promotions on the teams shirts.

Mini League

As mentioned earlier, the mini league will be an important feature of the website. This should have the same functions as the URL provided with monthly and overall standings. However, we would like to add an option to show each mini league members position in the overall table.

Paid Game

This will only take place for the Premiership version of the game. The way the paid game will work is that users will have the option to pay a weekly subscription fee of £2. By doing this, they are entered into a separate version of the game (although their predictions should still count for the free version), with it's own unique ranking system. The person who scores the most points each week will receive 50% of the total subscription fee for that work. So for example, if 500 people enter the game, the total fee will be £1000 and the winner will receive £500.

So now we need to track weekly scores, but it should also continue to track monthly and overall scores for additional winners.

We need a way to implement the Futurepay (see [url removed, login to view]) for more details, and for linking the number of subscribers to the total prize fund which is displayed to the user).

These are the core elements of the game. Next we will begin to work on the design specifications, which will help us complete the proposal.

Simon
