I run all of my web servers on AWS and have been doing so for years. I would be able to go in to look at your usage and tell you why your bill is that way. I run about a dozen sites from a micro image with a database server on RDS. That costs me about $40/month. My guess is that they used an image that is much larger than you really need. Or, you are using a lot more storage space than you need. I have 10+ years development experience with Wordpress. 15+ years development experience with PHP, MySQL and Javascript. The problems you describe requires me to be granted access to the AWS account to verify the setup. Second, is read-only access to the application source-code to see how it was configured to access the AWS database. Are you comfortable with this? Do you have privileges to grant access? A hint about the cost: each running instance of any service such as EC2 or RDS already has cost even if there is no traffic to your site. I'd like to help sort it out.
