This is an op-ed on urban food security that I edited in 2016 for an MA candidate at Columbia University. In this draft, my editing process is still visible in the form of track changes and comments. Many of the comments explain to the writer why I've made the changes I've made, so that he can retain greater control over the process, and learn for his next piece of writing. $This is a sprawling epic that weaves together the present, the past and the distant past, reminding us that all we love is never truly lost. After years of travelling, Mia receives a call from Asher, a figure from the shadows of her childhood. She travels to nurse him while he is dying. On his deathbed, he hands Mia the dreamcloth, a small treasure woven by a seamstress in a grim shtetl in Lithuania, which both holds and veils the mystery of a forbidden love affair just before Word War 2. Returning to her homeland South Africa, Mia tries to reconnect with people and places she left behind. She journeys through her childhood, trying to make sense of the injustices she witnessed when she was too young to understand them and the gaps and fractures they have left in her heart. Mia slowly begins to piece together the series of events with tragic ramifications that ripple through the generations.$

Claremont High School and LEAP School

I was a high school English teacher for students aged 13 to 18, as well as the Subject Head of the History Department for students aged 13 to 15. I was responsible for teaching students how to write in multiple genres, including argumentative, narrative, literary, reflective, persuasive and discursive essays, as well as news articles, op-ed pieces, reviews, agendas and letters. This deepened my editing and writing skills tremendously.

In my role as assistant to the Publisher, I was responsible for editing, proofreading, project managing, permissions and unsolicited manuscripts. I worked on a range of books including literary fiction and non-fiction titles.
