NASA Challenge: Develop 3D Models for Robonaut Simulation-Drill Battery and Charger

  • Estado: Closed
  • Premio: $100

Resumen del concurso

We (NASA) need to develop a number of high resolution 3D models to be used for Robonaut simulations. These 3D models are to be developed based on photographs of real items (see attached files). These simulated objects would be used for various grasp and manipulator testing.

This particular challenge is to build a 3D model of a drill battery and the drill battery charger. This item will be used by the Robonaut team in the development of vision and grasping controls to identify and localize the Drill Battery, and Drill Battery charger to charge and replace a battery on a cordless drill.

Submissions should include models for a standalone drill battery, a standalone drill battery charger, and a drill battery charger with a battery (in the charging position).

There is a scale in the attached imagery is in inches. All final model submissions must be delivered in on of the following formats: .prt (Solidworks, ProE); .step or .stp; .iges; .stl; .dae. NOTE: Freelancer submissions will need to be image file views of your model. If you win the contest, you will then send/transfer the model files to NASA via email, dropbox, etc.

All entries will be judged on the accuracy, quality, and fidelity (detail) of the model produced. Note that where highly similar top submissions are produced, the submission entered first will win.

“Brian did an great job of creating a detailed 3D model of a Drill Battery & Charger for use in our NASA Robonaut simulation. This was a contest and this was the winning submission.”

I was just wondering why the first winner was disqualified?
Btw, judging from the final winner's model, you did not require utmost precision, as it has been stated in your guidelines..

Examining the winner submission, its nice render. But differs from the photos you sent. For example Battery charger front, compare photo and 3D Model (stuff above label, on 3d model there is 6 extruded parts, on photo 7 + extruded base where led lamp is stacioned ...there is no where to be seen on 3d model,

Indeed there were a number of excellent submissions and it was very difficult to select a winner.

Hi aoxsystems, regard for you. I also not really happy regarding judging process. Actually I join 6 contest from Nasa. In some contest I am sure the winner is not real follow photograph. And @nasacoeci give some reason because ("where highly similar top submissions are produced, the submission entered first will win."). And I try to make it first submission with near to photograph in other contest, and again I'm loose. My suggestion to CH, please take a look more detail (like contour, parting line for plastic part, logo, etc) about your part and compare to all submission. Just suggest. But again, you are the judges. Thank you and no offence.

What happened with the original winner? Also, I'm selling my 3D model #14 for very low price, so my work doesn't go completely in vein. If You are interested. There is an offer :) All best!

I did check out your board. Very nice work on the charger (although I didn't see the battery). Hopefully you will be able to use this model to showcase your skills which are clearly demonstrated with that model. Thanks again for your efforts.

I would love to, but this contest is being run as part of a study that will compare results from the other 13 contest and duration is one of the variables that we need to keep constant. There are a couple of other contests we have the will run a couple more days.

Great! Note that this contest still has another 9 days left. as far as version goes, it does not really matter as long as you can deliver in one of the following formats: .prt (Solidworks, ProE); .step or .stp; .iges; .stl; .dae. Good luck!

Could this contest be split up? Say one has a better drill battery, but is lacking in the charger area as where another excels.

I won! DeWalt is a registered trademark. So any contest entries based on those images simply can not be original work. Luckily, I did not even look at those images for the drill, battery or battery charger. My 3D work is completely original using 100% open source resources right down to the operating system. So, in a polite manner, I declare victory, which makes perfect common sense.

Oh my goodness! NASA having the 3D models I have just created today is an honor! Yes, I accept! I will export from Blender 2.70 to formats: Collada (.DAE), Stanford (.PLY), and Stl (.STL). Thank you for your confidence in me.

I understand, you need the models UV'd and textured (labels) to be used in some kind of animation/presentation? Otherwise I don't see why you need the labels and textures for grasp and robot manipulation testing.

Ah got it. While not mandatory, if there are two designs that are equivalent and one has decals/stickers, we would likely award to the more detailed. Since this is a contest, we are awarding to the best submission (i.e. closest to the photos).
