Monthly Thought Leadership Article - Investment Portfolios
It is envisaged this will be a monthly publication (commencing November 2015) that examines the construction and stock selection process of creating and managing four (4) direct equity investment portfolios; Australian Income; Australian Smaller Companies: Global Resources and; Global Leaders - highly recognised global brands. These investment portfolios are targeted at financial advisers for distribution to their retail investors. These portfolios, while actively managed, are designed to be 'Buy and Hold' portfolios - they will not be trading portfolios.
I stress that this should be a "thought leadership" series that examines thematic issues; such as diversifying your investments: offshore; smaller company exposure - where the research is less prevalent and, therefore, the market less efficient with scope for greater returns. etc. etc. Discuss the countercyclical argument of buying sectors that are out of favour etc.
There could also be discussion examining the pro's and con of a 20 stock portfolio versus buying a managed fund (mutual fund).
The topics of the publications should be planned out at least three months prior, to ensure continuity in the evolution of thought process and the investment framework. Risk management is also a topic that should be considered.
All the above are only ideas provided to stimulate topics. These articles are less about why we have chosen the stocks that we have and more about the bigger picture of portfolio construction and stock selection.
While the articles should have an academic 'flavour' (and I stress "flavour"), the audience is financial advisers and retail investors. It should, therefore, be written so as a Grade 6 student could understand it.
