Developing a product which interfaces existing fax machines to the internet in order to provide benefits for its customers such as reduced call/fax costs, archiving of faxes and the ability to redirect incoming faxes to email. Fax device and its associated back-end cloud based servers.

A summary of the main features provided by the Fax system from the perspective of the user, as proposed in this specification, follows:

1. Faxes can be sent and received, via the customer’s class 3 fax machines, to/from any fax recipient on the public telephone network.

a. The customer operates the fax machine as if it were connected directly to a phone line.

b. Faxes can still be sent when there is no internet connectivity (buffering on the device)

c. Delivery notifications can be enabled (email/fax) to alert the user of a successful delivery of their fax

2. The Fax system provides a value service to their customers by providing the above functionality in the following way:

a. The Fax system will send the fax via a low cost route – the preference of routes is as follows: send directly to other Fax customers, send over a VOIP network via T.38, send via the public telephone network.

b. The Fax system utilises VOIP networks for voice calls.

3. Voice calls can be made and received from the handset of the fax machine if equipped.

4. Depending on the user’s preference - the user can choose to receive incoming faxes to their fax machine and/or via PDF to a designated email address.

5. Users have access to a web portal which allows them to view and manage faxes they’ve sent and received, including the facility to search for faxes based on their content.

6. Limited provision to allow the user to create and administer an account for their Fax service

7. Support for mulit-user accounts whereby multiple users can use the same fax machine yet each have access to their own account

8. Reliable Fax device firmware upgrade

9. User registration is automated and does not require the user to configure their Fax device

10. Management interface

11. Facilities for white labelling

12. Facilities for billing

13. Lower cost by reducing need for land line

14. Use of strong encryption for the secure transmission of faxes
