Hello, First of all I wish you luck with the book. I hope you enjoyed creating/writing it :) I would like to know more, or even to see your current background image. Downside to JPG format is that it's lossy, which means that any invasive correction will eventually lead to degrading the quality of the image. However, certain color correction can greatly improve the visual effect of the image. I'm thinking along those lines. You keep the original idea, I bring in the atmosphere.
