My approach would be a script that works like this: - open /var/log/messages (ssh/sftp standard log file) - seek to end of file and record offset - read lines since offset - extract successful logins: - shell out to mail utility and mail user The reboot could be handled with a very similar script: -You could fetch the most recent line of the output of $ last reboot. - see if's already has been reported in a state file /var/run/reboot_check perhaps - if it has changed mail the user and update the state file. Offcourse one has to take logrotation in account for the first script. PS: My stats look bad but it's mainly because an employer is snubbing payment. Please check my reviews, they are more fair.

Most of bidders will probably tell you that the good idea is to create /etc/profile script or similar solution which is not good because user can use other shells like /bin/sh to login. Basically, there are two good ways to achieve login monitoring: 1. Parse logs 2. Make use of pam-exec scripts to email you in case of login About reboot notification, it should be done through crontab @reboot trigger. If you have four or more servers, it is recommended to deploy RADIUS service for central authentication. Then you can easily do email notification by scripting RADIUS service. I know how to do that.
