Raspberry Pi Real-Time Clock Infra-Red Sender / Receiver PCB Design The purpose of this project is to design and prototype a small PCB circuit which connects directly to the GPIO pins of a Raspberry Pi Model 3 B to provide 3 x IR transmission outputs, and 1 x IR receive input, together with a real time clock module using a PCF2127 chip and CR1220 battery backup. 3.5mm jack sockets are to be used for the connectors to the emitters and receivers. The PCB board itself will just have solder holes to connect wires leading to the jack sockets - the jack sockets themselves are not required on the board. The board should ‘plug in’ directly to the Raspberry Pi GPIO pins with a suitable connector on the board. No software development is required. Real-Time Clock The real time clock component should use a PCF2127 chip connected to the GND, 3.3V, SDA and SCL pins of the Pi GPIO pins - example circuit to be supplied. Infra-Red Emission: A single GPIO pin is being used for the infra-red output - but each of the 3 x output connectors can optionally be isolated via a relay, so that certain output connectors can be isolated when sending infra-red signals. In other words, the infra-red signal transmitted will go through 1, 2 or all 3 of the output connectors, depending on the state of the relays. The relays themselves will be driven by 3 separate GPIO pins on the Pi. A suitable relay / switching mechanism should be chosen, possible with extra circuitry to cope with the output voltage of the GPIO pins. The default should be that with the GPIO pin low, the IR signal comes out of the output - as most of the time the same IR signal is required on all outputs. Data sheets & samples of the IR transmitters to be supplied Infra-Red Receive A single Infra-Red receive connection to a GPIO pin is required. Data sheets & samples of the receiver to be supplied. Design Concerns 1. Power consumption of the IR emitters / receiver, particularly when using all 3 IR outputs at the same time 2. When IR emitters or receivers are connected or disconnected via the jack sockets, there is a brief short circuit between power & ground, resulting in a reboot of the Raspberry Pi which is not desirable. Deliverables: 1 x Circuit Diagram in pdf format 1 x PCB layout diagram in pdf format and standard format for manufacture 1 x working prototype board We will provide a Raspberry Pi with working prototyped circuit for 1 IR emitter & receiver, and also the IR emitters / receivers for testing, along with a working software script which tests the input & outputs & a sample RTC circuit.

Hi, It is not a good idea to use relays for the switching as they require more power to operate. Also that could be the reason for reboots. A simple logic gate can do the job. Raspberry Pi header has the input 5V which should be used to in order to achieve higher output from the LEDs. If you can enlighten me on the end application then I may be able to contribute. Are you using LIRC ? How would you like the PCB to be designed. SMT (Production ready) or hand solderable (Great for DIY tinkering). I do not need any parts or hardware support from your end. I am in India and I already have a number of Raspberry Pi-s so can actually test it. You need to point me to some PCB manufacturer service that you can use. I can work up the gerbers according to their choice. Freelance is not my primary job and I am on GMT + 5:30 so might not be able to respond immediately to your chats when you initiate it. I’ve read your project description and decided to place a bid. Frankly, this is quite simple but I do need some clarification to ensure your expectations are met. - Why do you need the relays on the board just to turn on/off IR led outputs? Mechanical relay is usually big and may add a lot of noise to the system. I would propose that we use 1 GPIO to control transmitting IR signal and use 3 other GPIO pins to control the transistor (instead of the relay) to turn on/off the IR led. - I plan to buffer the voltage in capacitor to reduce the impact of IR emitters / receiver working at the same time. Probably, resistor and diode must be used to prevent the Pi from being reboot when IR emitters or receivers are connected or disconnected via the jack sockets In case you need to clarify more, please chat with me.

Hi, I would love to design this and build you a prototype. I design electronics and write firmware, and have plenty of experience with the raspberry pi. You don't want to use relays for this, they take up a lot of power to run, as well as a lot of board space. We can use MOSFETs to control the IR led aspect, as well as protecting from shorts on the connectors. We can easily cut the power to the LED when the circuit gets shorted, within less than a millionth of a second, preventing reboot. Could you tell me more about what you are making? I am from Brazil so I won't be able to send you a prototype, however I'm able to send you the circuit with the simulations (schematics in PDF and whatever other format you would like) and the PCB layout (PDF, BOM files, etc). Just a word of advice based on what I've read from the "Design Concerns" section, that should be considered even if I am not awarded: 1. The IR outputs will consume a lot of power when the GPIO 17 pin is high, because current will flow through the 10k resistors, and that can be circumvented. 2. We can use inductors to reduce the transient effects of the spike current.
