The answer may not satisfy you if you are looking for a quick answer for some immediate computational problem. If you are a mathematician or coder it will make you happy! Are you ready? First I have worked computational linear algebra since I began graduate school in the late 1970s, on both dense and sparse matrices. I have witnessed many changes but some things remain the same. So it is with at least some experience that I can say the following. The short answer is no size fits all. It depends. On many things: 1) is there any structure to your sparseness? Is the situation that any matrix element is zero with probability independently of every other element? or is there structure? What is the ratio of zero to nonzero entries? 2) what are your limitations? Memory? Computations? 3) Do you have dynamic range (condition number) concerns? In other words are finite wordlengths any issue? 4) Is k known apriori? Or do you need to find it from the data? 5) Assuming k is unknown is there a big gap between the k-th and k+1-th smallest eigenvalue? I will give you one answer for one set of assumptions. There are many many other answers for other assumptions. Job security for math and coder folks for decades to come! Ok so assume that we begin with a sparse n by n matrix R, where R=ATA, and that: a) The matrix R is very sparse and very large, so memory and computation are stressors. b) The matrix R is potentially ill-conditioned c) k is unknown, and the k+1-th smallest eigenva..
