Hello Freelancers. I'm looking for someone who can suggest a solution to a puzzle/problem, and help us get started in the right direction. Here are the details. We are a small manufacturer's rep business. We currently have an highly developed, custom MS Access database application that is the heart of our business information, handling everything from orders to commissions to forecasting, advertising and promotions, and more. It's a split database with users accessing the front end by logging onto our server (Windows 2008 R2) via remote desktop/terminal services. The back end (Access tables) are also on our server. We recently migrated to Office 365 for email, file storage and collaboration, etc.,, but users still have to log onto the server to get to our data, run reports, etc. We'd like to try to find a way to fully transition away from the server. The problem I'm facing is that trying to convert our existing database application over to a Microsoft "web app" would be a huge project that I'm not interested in. We'd have to try to replace all our VBA, for one thing, let alone re-creating 50 forms, over 300 queries and reports.... I'd like to find a way to keep our existing front end if at all possible, and migrate the tables somewhere "in the cloud" so I don't have to maintain the server in the office. I recently tried making a hybrid system with Office 365, importing the data into a web app, and then linking our front end (on each user's local desktop) to the new SQL tables that were created. But those tables don't maintain referential integrity, so we started seeing duplication and errors right away, and also the performance was really slow. I think it was probably not the right solution. I would prefer not to build a whole new application on a proprietary system like Caspio. Partly because of the work involved in starting from scratch, partly due to the monthly fees, and partly because if they go out of business, I'm out of luck. Someone told me the best solution would be to put the data online using SQL tables and building a website to access it using PHP, but I don't know PHP at all and don't have time to learn. I like understanding the application myself and being able to make changes as needed, but I own the business and I should be spending most of my time selling, not programming. So I am looking for an easier solution if it's out there. I looked at Amazon web services, wondering if they might offer an environment or any tools that would work, but I don't even understand the different terminology I see there, so I don't know if there's a solution there or not. So basically I'm looking for ideas on how to do this in a way that would minimize our development time, and keep expenses down. My problem is that I don't know enough about development, networks, SQL, etc. to even know if there's a good solution out there. I might just be paying for your advice. Here's my proposal. If someone can suggest a solution that works for us and that I can implement all by myself, I'll pay $75 for the suggestion - so your great idea and brainpower won't have gone to waste. If it's a solution that requires your assistance (most likely) for us to make the transition, I'll pay your hourly rate. Let me know what you think.

As mentioned amazon would be a great idea but only issue with amazon is its security. If you don't need that security then it will be open to the public anyone can access that. In my opinion you could try mysql from normal website hosting site. It is easy to use with great feature.

I think that a low cost solution could be to create a SQL Server db in the cloud server and to modify the Access application to use the remote tables instead of the local ones. If you could provide me the access app I could check if this is possible with your app. Rewriting the application (with PHP or with any other language) has a much higher cost (even if it's better solution).

Hi, I have a lot of experience with developing web based applications and modelling databases. If you want a solution that will be working from any web server in the cloud I would indeed recommend the use of a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) solution. There are a number of widely used CCK (Content construction kits) that will allow you to develop applications. Drupal comes to mind but Drupal has a pretty steep learning curve. I would therefore suggest instead a combination of Joomla and Seblod. Seblod is a free CCK extension for Joomla. So the whole setup is free and can be hosted easily on cheap hosting servers and though it's php based it doesn't require any php coding, only configuration for most features. For low level customization a bit of php can help but you can learn that at a later point. I have a lot of experience with Seblod and Joomla and will be able to assist you while you learn. We can discuss the conditions. Seblod will allow you to develop forms but also customized searches and customized lists with calculation for your reporting. Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. I'm also US based which could make communication easier. I ahve developed a numbe rof projects on freelancer.com I don't know why I appear as "New" I suggest you read my reviews. I look forward to hearing from you and help you develop your database. Regards. Xav.
