Our current goal is to create a test app for calculating and tracking grade point average (GPA) changes over the period of a whole study. The test course will be a Master of Science program in the Netherlands. Background Information A short description of the test study program is that there are 4 core courses (in the PowerPoint provided, they are the first 4 on the list in the app) each with 5.5 credits, 3 electives worth 6 credits each, and a thesis worth 16 credits. These credits are important as the GPA is weighted based on those credits. Grades in the Dutch system are based on a scale of 0-10, in which 10 is the highest. Any grade above 5.5 is a pass, above an 8.25 is cum laude, and above 9 is summa cum laude. App Description The goal of the app is to provide students with a quick overview of their current GPA, at any time during their study. A GPA should hence be calculated even if some courses have not been taken yet, and the GPA should be adjusted according to the number of credits allocated to each course taken. For example, if a student has taken the first two courses, the results will be the weighted GPA of two results. Once the third course is completed, the GPA will become the weighted average of the 3 courses. Intermediate results should be saved until the next course is entered, and a new result is gotten. The functionality of the app comes from the fixed credits associated with each course, so that only the grades, and not the credits, need to be entered into the app. This means that we expect formulas to automatically make the association between course, credits, and the entered grade. Furthermore, the goal of the app is to motivate students to achieve higher grades. Therefore, a GPA of over 8.25 (cum laude) will result in an automatic clapping sound effect, and a GPA of over 9 (summa cum laude) will result in an automatic cheering sound effect. Further Specifications - The App should be usable for Android phones - There should be potential that the App can later on be used on iOS devices (with some extra tweaking of course) - The App should not be limited to a specific screen size. It should adjust to different phones accordingly Extra Information We attached two documents, the PowerPoint being a visual representation of the app with all further descriptions provided, and an Excel sheet with example calculations of the weighted GPAs. These documents explain the app in further detail, in terms of functionality and design.
