This project concerns a wireless power transfer system based on RF resonant coupling. The power transfer in such a system essentially relies on the mutual coupling between two coils in the source and load resonance circuits. When the two resonance circuits are synchronously tuned, the system achieves high transfer efficiency. Unfortunately a lot of parameters could affect (or detune) the resonance frequencies, which lowers the transfer efficiency. This could be due to the change of distance or orientation between the coils or the proximity of objects. This project aims to design and implement a wireless power transfer circuit with the ability to respond to detuning and eventually to track the optimal efficiency. The project will involve the modelling of the system both analytically and by using CAD software such AWR Microwave Office and then implementing a prototype. The main deliverable will be a prototype wireless power transfer system with a tunable circuit that can respond to and compensate detuning.
