Fix Attacks on our root server

We received this email from our Host: We have received complaints reporting us of hacking attacks originating from your 1&1 Root-Server. You will find further information on the nature of attacks at the end of this e-mail. The reports indicate that your 1&1 Root Server has been infected with malicious software and is thus part of a botnet and remote controlled by hackers. This represents a serious danger for your data security! ******************************************************************************* In case we should not receive any feedback from you, we would have to assume that your 1&1 Root-Server has been captured by criminals. For your own security, your Server would be disconnected. ******************************************************************************* To restore the security of your 1&1 Server, proceed as follows: 1. Boot your 1&1 Server into the rescue-mode in order to prevent any further attack. 2. Remove all malicious files and secure the present security leaks in your system and software. Note: Most attacks are carried out by malicious software installed beforehand through a security leak in your system. Such security leaks can often be found in older versions of popular content management software such as Joomla!, Contenido, phpBB. Up-dating this software considerably increases it's security level. 3. In the event you should not be able to eliminate the problem, please reimage the Server. Make sure to scan and secure your backup data as well. 4. Get back to us subsequently in any case within the following 48 hours. To do so, reply to this e-mail leaving our reference in your message.
